NOTE:  Colors are a topic of conversation and a matter or opinion.  The following are opinions shared by our good friends at Florida Hedgehogs...  We are grateful for the years of work they have put into African Pygmy Hedgehogs. 


ALSO:   Facial features such as  badger stripes or body markings such as pinto do NOT determine color.

  • Quill Color:  Widely banded black
  • Body color: black skin, mottled belly
  • Facial color: Black
  • Eye Color: Black

Grey

  • Quill color:  Widely banded deep grey to average banding black to varying shades of grey.
  • Body color: black to varying shades of grey
  • Eye Color: Black

Brown

Light Brown

  • Quill color:  Banding is average and varying shades of brown.
  • Body Color: Mottled varying from brown to grey to black hues
  • Eye Color:  Black

Light Brown

Pale Brown / Cinnacot (Brown Dilute)

Light Brown

  • Quill color:  Banding is average - wide and is light brown in color.
  • Body color: skin is nude-light, may have mottled belly in brown or light brown hues.
  • Eye Color: Black, Garnet or Ruby

  • Quill color:  Banding is average-wide and is tan or very light pale brown color.
  • Body color: skin is typically nude or white and belly may be mottled tan or pale brown.
  • Facial color: Tan or very pale brown but may have a brown or grey hue.
  • Eye color: Black
  • **Note: Dilute is a gene mutation rather than a true color. Some breeders refer to this color as Lilac or Lavender.

  • Quill Color:  Banding ia average-wide and ranges from yellowish tan to pale gold even light to medium orange.
  • Body Color:  White -tan belly is rarely mottled
  • Facial color: Nude-pale tan to pale orange or pale browns.
  • Eye Color: Garnet, Black, or Ruby

  • Quill Color: Average wide, pale orange to pale peachor pale yellow.
  • Body Color:  White -tan to white and shows no mottling on the belly.
  • Facial color:  Pale orange to no discernible coloring
  • Eye color: Ruby or garnet, in rare cases black

  • Quill Color:  Banding is average-wide and is yellowish tan to pale gold but no darker
  • Body Color:  Skin is nude or white and is rarely ever mottled
  • Facial Color: nude-pale tan and in rare cases, light brown
  • Eye color: most often garnet but may be black or ruby
